So here’s my dilemma. Last summer I tried sailing in Croatia with some friends and we had a skipper, which was fun but also meant we were kind of “guests” on our own trip. Now I’m looking at Seychelles, and I keep hearing about bareboat charters. It sounds tempting because it’s more freedom and privacy, but I’ve only sailed a few times before and never in the Indian Ocean. Some people told me that Seychelles has tricky winds and navigating between the islands can be a challenge. Has anyone here tried both options there? I’m trying to figure out whether I should play it safe with a skipper or go for the adventure of steering the yacht myself.

I’m not really into sailing, but Seychelles has always been on my list for other reasons. I’ve heard the beaches there are out of this world, and some people say it’s the clearest water they’ve ever seen. For me, it’s more about the islands themselves rather than how you get around them. I’ve seen pictures of La Digue and Praslin, and they honestly look like something out of a movie. Even if someone isn’t into boats, I feel like just visiting those islands by ferry or local tours would still make the trip unforgettable.
I’ve actually been in a similar spot! Two years ago we rented a catamaran in Seychelles and decided on a skippered charter for the first week, then switched to bareboat the next. Honestly, it worked out great because we learned a lot from the skipper about local conditions, routes, and even the best hidden beaches. If you’re not super confident, I’d suggest starting with a skipper at least for a few days. You’ll also find practical details on both options on this site about Indian Ocean sailing — https://charterclick.sc/. What helped me personally was realizing that bareboat gives you full independence, but you also carry full responsibility, and if weather shifts, that can be stressful. With a skipper, you can still relax and enjoy, but if you want hands-on experience, mix the two like I did.
